Ankara through the Window of Istanbul
Date
2017
Project type
Solo exhibition, Gallery of the Kolarac Endowment, Belgrade, Serbia, 2017
Collaboration
Realised in collaboration with the Yunus Emre Turkish Cultural Centre
Ankara Through the Window of Istanbul developed from the artist’s book Istanbul: A View Through the Window, extending its visual language beyond the pages of the book and into physical space.
Drawings, paintings, moving image, projected text and translucent surfaces form a spatial composition in which images appear, overlap and gradually disappear as the viewer moves through the exhibition. Transparent fabrics suspended from ceiling to floor create a sequence of shifting screens, while video projection passes through multiple layers, allowing the image to fade progressively through space. Large-format drawings and fragments of text surround this central structure, transforming the gallery into a scenographic environment.
The project marks an important transition in my practice: the artist’s book begins to operate as a spatial and scenographic structure. Sequence, layering, fragmentation and the act of looking through become principles for constructing an exhibition space rather than remaining contained within the book.
The exhibition was presented at the Gallery of the Kolarac Endowment in Belgrade in 2017 and realised in collaboration with the Yunus Emre Turkish Cultural Centre.
